Dropping Playing an Instrument

When students want to drop playing their instrument it is very important to take time to think about it. Some questions to ask are: Do they have a good reason for wanting to drop playing? Do they want to drop just for social reasons or because they perceive that another music option is “less work”? Playing an instrument is an exciting and beneficial activity and should not be given up lightly. Many times student will go through a slump period especially in grades 7 or 8 only to come out of it with renewed interest and energy later on. They need us to support them and encourage them through this time period. Many students who drop playing in middle school regret dropping when they go to high school and even beyond into adulthood.

I don’t know why anybody would want to quit, the songs are difficult but fun!
